When you hear that phrase “Show Me the Money!”* you almost immediately think of that movie ‘Jerry Maguire’* which pretty well brought it to popularity. The phrase became such a representation of the achievement of success within the professional athletics community that essentially every Pro on the planet, and their agents, were soon shouting “Show Me the Money!” in their negotiations. Players and agents were then negotiating from a position in which they had come to see their value differently, and if a team or owner wanted them, that team or owner was going to have to pay plenty.
It really didn’t take long for the phrase to catch on beyond the pro-athletics environment. While perhaps jokingly at first, a lot of business board room negotiations also became centered around the same “Show Me the Money” demand when it came to buyer-seller discussions, especially in cases of business acquisitions. In other words, the ‘value’ was in the eyes of the beholders… “if you want it it’s going to cost you plenty”.
Jerry Maguire was a great negotiator, he knew the value of those he represented and he made certain they got every penny they were worth, he never left a cent on the table. How much are you leaving on the table by failing to recognize your true value and the value of what you do? Every time you invoice the old-fashioned way you are actually devaluing your work and yourself.
So, the question in my mind is, “why are YOU not shouting, ‘show Me the Money’?” Why are you waiting around for the loose change that falls from the pockets of your clients when you send them an invoice based upon the nickels and dimes you have billed using the same old rate schedule for the time-based work you’ve done? Why have you not yet realized that “YOUR value must first be visible in your own eyes for your clients to see it.”
It’s only when you recognize your value, that you can bill your clients based upon the true value of your services, and then you will be shouting… “Show Me the Money!”
