I was very fortunate to spend the last 5 days at Scaling New Heights at Atlantis in the Bahamas. Insightful Accountant is a small business, so my wife usually comes with me to work our booth. She is a teacher so she was not able to attend since the show took place during the last week of our school year. I had to recruit someone who was equally talented, dedicated and fun to be around. My first call was to my mother, who jumped at the chance to go with me. If you were at Scaling New Heights, you probably saw her at our booth, helping me hand out trophies during our ProAdvisor of the Year awards presentation, walking around talking to people or swimming with the dolphins. She was born to work a trade show!
But I digress.
School is out for the summer. Or is it? As I mentioned, we just returned from Scaling New Heights which is the largest event dedicated to QuickBooks ProAdvisors in the world. This is a hardcore QuickBooks training event. Attendees get up early, go to classes, walk the floor, network with sponsors and one another and still find the energy to attend the socials and the private parties. Then get up and do it again for three days.
When I returned home, everyone was glad to see me and glad that school is out for the summer. Or is it? I know “school” is not out for me! I know that there is so much I need to do and to learn to keep pushing my business forward, that MY school can’t possibly be out for the summer. I need to keep learning. I need to keep studying. I need to keep growing in order for my business to thrive, which is what I want. I want Insightful Accountant to THRIVE, grow and to get better. I want Insightful Accountant to live up to what one attendee told me this week. “If you are in this business, you MUST read Insightful Accountant”. WOW. Comments like that are why we do what we do.
My school is not out for the summer. I am going to my own “summer school” in order to get better at what I do. I am going to work on my weaknesses and build on my strengths to be a better business person, to be more organized in my day to day work and to continue to increase my knowledge of the products in the ecosystem.
Part of my own “summer school” experience will be taking place at trade shows. I published a list of events we’ll be attending recently. You can find it here. If school is not out for the summer for you, then please look us up at one of these future events. We’d also like to hear what you are working on this summer in order to become better at what you do. Just post your comments in the box below.
Have a great summer. But don’t stop learning!
(PS – I have not told my boys, but school is not out for them either!)
