The song we sing each New Years Eve at the stroke of Midnight may seem to pose the idea of 'forgetting the old (past) year when in reality the contrary is true... it is actually intended to make us reflect upon our long standing relationships by asking a 'rhetorical' question.
Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should old acquaintance be forgot, and old lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we'll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne.
Based on an old 'Scots poem', the song teaches us that rather than forget, we should 'cherish our memories' of the past year and those we spent time with during it, because the phase 'auld lang syne' should be interpreted "for the sake of our times together."
So, when Midnight strikes and the music plays, even though 2020 has had so much hardship and heart ache, let us also 'remember' and cherish our memories of the best of the year and those we spent time with even if they were the last of such times simply "for the sake of our times together."
From all of us here at Insightful Accountant, we would hope that our acquaintances never be forgotten, and 'auld lang syne' to each of you along with our wishes for a Happy, Safe and Prosperous New Year in 2021.
