Brad Smith, Intuit's President and CEO, has announced the winner of Intuit's "Small Business, Big Game" contest, and the 4-million-dollar television commercial during the SuperBowl on February 2, 2014, that accompanies the first place award. Goldie Blox, is a San Francisco Bay Area company that describes themselves as "a toy company out to inspire the next generation of female engineers." Their website proudly touts themselves as Engineering Toys for Girls, and collectively they refer to their products as "Toys for future innovators."
Debbie Sterling is the founder and CEO of Goldie Blox. Her first awareness of engineering came when her high school math teacher suggested she pursue it as a college major. Four years later she graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Product Design. The inspiration for Goldie Blox apparently arose out of her awareness that there were few women in her engineering classes, and she became determined to "disrupt the pink aisle" with toys designed to introduce girls to engineering from the earliest of ages.
Many of the toys Goldie Blox offers feature "Goldie", a girl who wears overalls, and is more of a 'problem solver' than a 'model-type' like Barbie. In reviewing their website in preparation of this article, I found that these toys were not only based on engineering principles, but designed to promote and facilitate design ideas and possibilities....I may just have to rush right out and get myself a couple of these toys....they look like a lot of fun.
It indeed appears to me that Intuit has in deed 'picked a real winner', a job well done in selecting an innovative small business to be their first 'Big Game' feature. I haven't heard if Intuit plans to continue the "Small Business, Big Game" promotion in future years, but if they do I for one will be more than interested in how those future winners can compete with this year's 'first place'.
Congratulations Goldie Blox, I'm looking forward to seeing your 'Big Game' commercial during tomorrow's SuperBowl. And I am really anxious how this company flourishes as a result of that 'promotion of a lifetime.'
