Editor's Note: In an effort to make certain our readers are aware of impending changes that may critically impact their computer environments, Insightful Accountant wants to make sure you are aware of Microsoft's recent announcement. The announcement, which discusses the retirement of the Internet Explorer (IE) 11 desktop application on certain versions of Windows 10, is paraphrased—and/or quoted—below.
On June 15, 2022, Microsoft will retire the Internet Explorer (IE) 11 desktop application on certain versions of Windows 10. As such, IE11 will no longer be supported. Microsoft will begin a process of progressively redirecting the IE11 desktop application over the following months to Microsoft Edge and will ultimately disable IE11 as a desktop application via a Windows Update.
Microsoft recommends that IE11 users take action to control their own retirement of IE11 during this final month (May 15-June 15) in order to prepare for the IE11 retirement, progressive redirection and disablement.
Microsoft’s recommended steps for self-transition from Internet Explorer 11 include the following1:
Timing:
- The IE11 desktop application will be retired on June 15, 2022
- Windows 10 LTSC and Server will not be affected (for a full list of what is in scope for retirement, see the MS FAQs)
- IE11 is not available on Windows 11
Action:
- To continue using a supported browser, transition to Microsoft Edge
- To continue using legacy IE-based sites and apps in Windows 10 and Windows 11, you must configure those sites and apps to open in Microsoft Edge using Internet Explorer mode
- You can use IE driver for automatic, end-to-end site testing in IE mode
- Use policy to disable the IE11 application and ensure you are prepared for retirement
